It might seem strange for many, but alternative medicine has been gaining more popularity in the U.S. Generally speaking, alternative medicine refers to forms of health treatment that arent considered standard medical practices in the West. Technically, alternative therapies are those which are used in place of traditional medicine. The field of alternative medicine is so diverse that it is difficult to confine it into one definition. It covers everything from diet to exercise to hypnosis to adjusting a persons energy levels and so on.
Over the years, more and more people are turning to alternative medicine to address physical and mental health issues. In fact, in 2008, over 38% of Americans admit to having undergone at least one form of alternative medicine. Here are some forms of alternative medicine:
Hypnotherapy also known as hypnotic suggestion or hypnosis. This involves being in a state of trance where the person experiences heightened concentration. This is done with the help of mental imagery and verbal repetition facilitated by a therapist. During this state, the person feels relaxed and calm, making him more open to suggestion. This treatment modality is used for dealing with:
o Fatigue related to radiotherapy for cancer patients
o Pain control for conditions such as cancer, fibromyalgia, joint problems, irritable bowel syndrome, headaches, and even dental procedures
o Behavioural changes such as insomnia, smoking, phobias, bed-wetting, and obesity
o Menopausal symptoms such as hot flashes
Acupressure - this practice is like acupuncture, minus the needles. Here, the practitioners apply pressure using their hands, feet, or elbows to specific points of the body (known as meridians). The theory suggests that these meridians are life-energy (chi or qi) carrying channels throughout the persons body. It is believed that when a body is ill, it is because a meridian is unbalanced or is blocked. These blockages are relieved through acupressure so that energy may once again flow freely ultimately restoring health and wellness. At present, very little research exists, but positive results have been found. Acupressure may aid in decreasing nausea for cancer patients undergoing chemotherapy and for people experiencing anxiety.
Ayurveda - also called Ayurvedic Medicine, this therapy hails from India and dates back to thousands of years. The practitioner utilizes various techniques, including the use of massages, herbs, and special diets in order to keep the body, mind, and spirit in perfect balance. This will promote wellness.
Aromatherapy - this is the use of essential oils to promote health. These oils come from plant roots, seeds, leaves, or blossoms which are used in the form of concentrated extracts. They can be taken orally, massaged into the skin, or inhaled, depending on what the purpose of the therapy is. The oils are used for fighting infection, inflammation, depression, pain, and anxiety. Some people also use aromatherapy to promote relaxation.
